Disc Herniation

Symptoms: lower back pain, some with radiation down to the hip, legs and feet. Patient with disc herniation cannot tolerate prolonged sitting and standing. Lower limb muscles atrophy or incontinence would be encountered for severe cases.

Consequence: lower back pain and numbness, incontinence.

Causes: usually caused by improper posture or trauma. For example, heavy lifting with trunk forward bending posture. Long term high-heeled shoes wearing, obesity and improper sitting posture would also give rise to the development of disc herniation.

Disc herniation introduction:
Disc is found in between vertebras which serve as a shock absorber. When the disc is hurt and prolapsed, disc herniation is developed.

Chiropractic adjustment: by means of lever concept in biomechanics, chiropractor can restore the disc displacement by proper manipulation techniques.

Chiropractic F & D spinal traction machine: F & D Technique can apply traction force, releases and twisting force on sites of disc herniation, help fix the disc displacement.

Medications: NSAIDs

Physiotherapy: short wave diathermy, heat treatment, lumbar traction, interferential therapy would be used for muscle relaxation and symptomatic relief.

TENS: domestic use for symptomatic relief.

Contrast bath: heat and cold treatment could be used alternatively for pain control. Heat treatments are hot bath, hot pack, etc. to promote blood circulation and release muscle spasm; cold treatment is mainly for pain control.

Surgical operation: if symptoms are severe, prolapsed disc segment can be removed by surgical means. However, spinal fusion may be indicated if complications exist post-operatively.
